Many clients that claimed the credit this year loved the results, but maybe were a bit surprised that it wasn’t as easy as just filling out the worksheet. The State of Maine is definitely doing their due diligence in regards to this credit, and they are requesting additional information from taxpayers in order to process the refund.
Here is what you need to know. The State will want a copy of the transcript from the college you claimed the credit for. This can be an “unofficial” copy from the college. They will also need proof of payment for all student loan payments made throughout the year. A representative with the State informed me that they would like to see not only the bill from the student loan company, but also something from your bank showing all of the payments hitting your account.
I know this seems like a lot of extra work, but the credit is worth it, and you worked hard for your degree, so why not do a bit more work to get the benefits the State is willing to give to you?
